Emergency crews responded to the shoreline of Long Pong Road in Southwest Harbor Wednesday evening. 43 year old Eli Straus, his daughter and her friend, both 12, had fallen through the ice while all three were on a single snowmobile.
“They hit either a patch of ice that was not thick or otherwise open water,” said Game Warden Chris Sargent. “But at any rate the sled went in the water, they made their way to shore. It was about 30 yards or so from where they went in, to the shore line. Once they got to shore, they walked up a really steep cliff and became stranded there.”
“I think that it’s important that when you go on trips like this that you let a responsible adult know where you are going, what your plan is, and what time you’re going to be home. Come prepared, bring your cell phone.”
“When it comes to snow on the ice like we have these conditions here, it’s hard to tell exactly what the ice conditions are underneath the snow. You can’t tell the changes or cracks so just be wary. Test the ice if you’re going to be on it, try not to go where people haven’t gone before.”
And if the worst should happen, Wardens say stay calm and get off the ice as soon as you can.
“If you do become submerged or fall into the water, just do your best to get out. Flutter kick, roll up onto the ice. Once you get out, spread your weight evenly across the ice and then make it to shore.”
Straus and the two girls have been released from the hospital. Emergency crews from Tremont, Southwest Harbor, and Mount Desert are being credited for their quick response.
